First blog entry! Woohoo!
I started this website yesterday. I thought it would be a good way to exercise and show others my web design skills and any projects. Truth is, I have a bunch of skills that could be used in a professional setting, but I have no portfolio! All my stuff is either unfinished or on TH, and I don't think it'd be very professional of me to show my OCs' frankensteined profiles to my possible employers
I have a habit of biting off more than I can chew, and I'd ideally have something to show a prospect "employer" by june 12th, but I already know I won't be able to do as much as I want to, especially since I have to study and work on projects for uni
As I mentioned in my site intro, I'm studying biology. I love it a lot! I'm looking to start working in the area and there are a few jobs inside the university that ask for people to do science communication. I've never done a proper science communication project, but I definetely have the skills for that! It would be a nice handshake between two of my passions: art and biology
Thing is, I have a nagging feeling that I'm being overly demanding of myself. In the age of canva and site-building tools like squarespace (ugh), anyone can make a professional looking design or website. Should I really invest so much time and effort into coding a website from scratch when someone can ask a vibecode AI and get similar results? I think the answer is complicated. Doing it from scratch has the advantage of ownership. No one can question if you stole anything if you do it from scratch. It also has what I think it's its biggest advantage over more ready-made methods: creativity. My pages don't look anything like what a standard professional portfolio looks like, and that's because I want it that way. I like making things fun and colorful and I think the jankyness makes it kinda nostalgic. Like a handmade gift from a younger relative, you know? lol
Unfortunately, that creativity isn't valued by everyone, especially outside the arts industry. And that's not entirely a bad thing, sometimes projects call for a more standardized or less ornate design. With science communication, it really depends on your specific project. I feel like there's space for both kinds of designs within science communication, and I'm hoping the people who'll interview me think my handmade janky site is appropriate for their project. Also, if you're reading this because I sent you the link to my website as an example of what I can do, haiii :3c plz hire meee x3 (IM JOKING) (unless... 👀 👀)

Hey gang!
Today wasn't as productive as yesterday (although, duh, I LOCKED IN yesterday to a point it was a little scary, but okay), probably because neocities was down for most of my waking hours :( but alas, here I am.
I completely re-did my biology page because I lost a div along the way and wanted things to be neat. I gave up on coding the quiz from scratch because that would require me to learn javascript, and I simply do not have time for that. I ended up using a more ready-made embed-able option that has a vibecode tool. It was funny, I felt a chimp gnawing at the bars of my enclosure trying to edit the font without using the AI. like LET ME INTO THE CSS!!! I KNOW HOW TO DO THIS MYSELF NO NEED TO WASTE WATER OVER IT!!! GET ME OUT OF THE USER-FRIENDLY DESIGNER MENU!!!!!! It still ended up looking nothing like the rest of my site, which I will get over, eventually. Maybe it's for the best, more professional-looking and all...
I still have to decide what'll actually go on my biology page. I'm feeling kinda pressured because that's probably the page my employers will check out first (if they even look at any of the others at all) because it's the closest to a science communication portfolio I have. I don't wanna doxx myself completely and just put up straight up assignments I did for uni there, but otherwise I just have blinkies, a quiz, and geeky ramblings to offer... I'm falling into my perfectionist tendencies again. C'mon, all the biologists I've met so far are total geeks! What is science communication but well-researched geeking out? (THIS IS AN EXAGGERATION FOR COMIC EFFECT)
Okay, so my plan for today is to give the web designing a break and actually do my household chores for once
TOMORROW I'll draw up a general scheme of how my biology page will look like, and then get back to making it. Let's hope neocities stays up 🤞🤞
Just so I won't forget, here are some of my ideas: critter of the month, sci-comm recs, fav subjects, fun facts, blinkie requests? password-locked page
Okay that's it gn! I doubt anyone's reading this but if you are, hi!! let's be friends, my insta is in the page footer, send me a DM!!

Hello again!
In the end, I decided to make a separate "portfolio" page to act as, well, my portfolio! That way, I can make it a separate, more corporate style, just to show I'm capable of doing that. I just finished it right now and... Phew! that was a lot of work! I still have some things I'm unhappy with but I think it was a great learning experience. I've got carousels and embeds and animated collapsible sidebars and everything, it's proper business stuff! I also put some of my art up. I don't plan on uploading my art here since I already have instagram and tumblr for that, but idk if you wanna check it out, it's there!
But now that I think about it, maybe it would be better to make my portfolio private and only send my possible employers the link. I've got my real name on some stuff there and that's not best practice with internet safety... Although, nowadays...
People tell me I'm paranoid about internet privacy and all that stuff, that my information is already out there, so why try to hide it? But I don't know...
I'm rambling. I gotta go, I have things to do! Gonna apply to the job I want now with my brand-new portfolio~~ byeee
